New animal housing regulations: are you prepared?
Do you have pigs, chickens, dairy cattle, or calves? Then the government has clear requirements for animal housing. This requires choices.
At Van Dun Advies, we help you make those choices in time. Planning ahead prevents expensive renovations and last-minute stress.
What’s changing?
The Animal-Friendly Livestock Farming Agreement establishes new regulations in the Animal Keepers Decree, with the aim of improving animal welfare.
Pigs: from 2027, larger farrowing crates, partially solid floors for weaned piglets, no fully slatted floors, more space per animal.
Chickens: lower stocking densities, platforms and sheltered areas for broilers, more floor space for laying hens.
Cows: One feeding area per cow, a ban on tethering (from 2035), cow brushes (from 2028), separate areas for calving/sick animals, and a minimum of 9 m² per lactating cow from 2040.
Calves & beef cattle: Social housing will become the norm, with restrictions on individual keeping and transport of young calves, and minimum floor space requirements.
What does this mean for you?
Existing barns sometimes have transition periods, but new construction or renovations must comply with the new requirements immediately. Therefore, it’s wise to consider now what this means for your barn and plans.
How can we help?
We understand the regulations and translate them into practical solutions. Whether it’s drawings, permits, or strategic advice: we ensure your barn is future-proof.
