Higher returns are in the farrowing stable!

Now that the piglet price is slowly rising again, weaning as many piglets as possible is extra profitable. Piglet mortality in the maternity stable is and remains a delicate subject.

The dropout rate in the maternity stable has been steadily increasing since 2010 (except for 2017) and was 13.3% at the end of 2017. Higher than the 12.8% in 2008, and this despite the enormous attention and measures taken on the subject. Does that mean there is little to improve and everything has been done to improve big vitality? Several individual pig farmers, however, manage to stay below that 10% with their piglet mortality.

Every 1% piglet mortality costs € 9.30 per sow per year *. For every average Dutch company of 550 sows, a 1% reduction in piglet mortality is equivalent to a profit increase of +5000 Euros. In addition, it also provides more job satisfaction and an image enhancement for pig farming. Piglet mortality and piglet vitality therefore remain very important to pay attention to every day.
