The number of kilograms of feed per average sow per year and per weaned piglet are independent indicators, according to Jan Kerkhof and Kim de Wit of Fransen Gerrits. They argue that true efficiency depends on how many kilograms of sow feed are needed to wean a kilogram of piglet. “The Feed Efficiency Factor shows a difference of almost 2 kilograms of feed per kilogram of weaning weight between the nine farms studied, where all sows and their litters are weighed,” they say. “This provides greater insight and gives them additional control options to improve production.”
