Main theme: Animal Health & Welfare

Animal Health & Welfare is one of the main themes at the upcoming Dutch Pork & Poultry Expo. Previous editions have already focused on animal health, and this year we are adding animal welfare to the agenda. Both are closely connected: good health promotes welfare, and welfare in turn contributes to better health. It’s all about finding the right balance. On this page, you will find not only videos from our knowledge sessions from previous editions but also valuable information about this theme. Get inspired and informed about the latest insights and developments in animal health and welfare!

Coccidiosis: Endure or Overcome? With Jeroen Leurs

On the second day of Dutch Pork & Poultry Expo 2024, a symposium took place with the central theme “Animal Health for Pig and Poultry Farmers.” For the poultry sector, the focus was specifically on Coccidiosis and Gumboro in poultry farms, featuring two presentations by experts.

Jeroen Leus (Poultry Veterinarian at Animal Health Group) discussed strategies to combat coccidiosis. He highlighted various approaches such as the use of feed, water, and vaccines to keep this parasite under control.

The Importance of Coccidiosis and Gumboro Monitoring with Pieter Kühn

Coccidiosis is a major challenge in poultry farming because it is highly contagious and causes intestinal damage, leading to growth delays and mortality. The parasite spreads quickly through manure, and its eggs (oocysts) are extremely resistant. Additionally, the effectiveness of medications decreases due to resistance. Prevention through vaccination, hygiene, and good barn management is therefore essential.

Pieter Kühn, poultry veterinarian and Technical Services Manager at HIPRA, discusses the importance of monitoring coccidiosis and Gumboro on poultry farms. Monitoring provides insight into the prevention of these infections. He also demonstrates, using results, the benefits of in-ovo vaccination in the hatchery.

The High Quality Piglet Concept by Hipra with Erik van Esch

Eric van Esch, Technical Services Manager at HIPRA, talks about HIPRA’s ‘High Quality Piglet’ concept and provides practical advice for producing high-quality piglets that get off to a good start in the finishing phase. To ensure piglets are free from various viruses and bacteria at weaning, not only the status of the piglets is examined, but also the farm management and operations are carefully reviewed.
