Bij een HB meting wordt de hoeveelheid ijzer in het bloed van biggen in de kraamstal gecontroleerd om te kijken of de ijzer toediening effectief is geweest. Waarom ijzer toedienen en controleren? Biggen worden geboren met een beperkte ijzervoorraad, daarom hebben zij binnen 3-4 dagen na geboorte een injectie nodig ter aanvulling van deze voorraad. Wanneer dit niet gebeurd, te laat gebeurd of de dosering niet klopt ontwikkelen de biggen een ijzertekort ofwel bloedarmoede. Dit is in de stal te zien als bleke biggen. Het gevolg van een ijzertekort is dat het bloed minder zuurstof kan vervoeren waardoor de big minder goed functioneert. Ook werkt het immuunsysteem minder goed bij een ijzertekort waardoor de big gevoeliger is voor infecties. Als de Hb meting is uitgevoerd en blijkt dat niet alle biggen de gewenste hoeveelheid ijzer in hun bloed hebben, dan kan het zijn dat er aandacht besteed moet worden aan één of meerdere van de volgende punten: Worden alle biggen wel behandeld? Worden alle biggen op tijd behandeld? Hoe nauwkeurig wordt het ijzer toegediend? Welke dosering wordt er gebruikt? Uitvoering Er wordt bij 30 biggen (3 biggen per toom) op 10-14 dagen na de ijzer toediening een druppel bloed afgenomen uit het oor. Elk monster wordt direct in de Hb meter gestopt en de waarde wordt afgelezen. Doorgaans is er 1 tot 1,5 uur tijd nodig voor het uitvoeren van de meting.
